Acne Myths Exposed

Acne is never pleasant and can be troublesome to treat.  In order to be able to take care of acne and also prevent it from reoccurring, it is important to have a good understanding of what causes it.  There are a few common misconceptions about what causes acne.  These misconceptions may actually hinder treatment or even worse, stop people from acquiring treatment in the first place.  It’s good to be aware of these mistaken beliefs so that your approach to treating acne is the right one to take.

The first misconception about acne is that it’s just part of growing up and you can’t do much about getting it.  People often believe acne is just associated with puberty and teenagers and adolescents are the only ones who are afflicted by it.  This is simply not true.  Acne can occur at any age.  It does tend to be more common in people between the ages of 12 and 30 however, but puberty and ‘growing up’ do not cause acne, they simply make you more vulnerable to it.

People often blame high stress levels for acne too.  Sure, having a less stressful lifestyle is very beneficial, but it won’t stop the acne.  Acne, on the other hand, can cause a number of emotional problems, raise a person’s stress levels, lower their self confidence, and it can certainly make life a lot less enjoyable.  If people are stressed they can tend to be less concerned with their personal hygiene, and so acne has a greater chance of developing.  Acne is often linked to stress because of the emotional troubles it can cause a person, but it shouldn’t be blamed on stress directly.

Many people believe that oily foods, desserts and chocolates can cause acne, but this is another common misconception.  It is true, however, that a healthy diet consisting of plenty of fruits and vegetables and consuming enough water every day goes a long way to preventing the appearance of acne and speed up any treatment you may be on.

The worst misconception is probably that it will eventually go away on its own and treatment isn’t necessary.  Just trying to forget about it could result in the problem becoming worse.  It is important to know the real causes of acne so you can actively prevent it through correct skin care methods, and be able to treat it right if it does occur.
