Ahhhh! The luxuriously relaxing feeling that a nap can bring to your life is an experience which most of us are eager to enjoy. Even the most stressful day can become easier to handle if there is time to grab a quick nap in between chores, obligations and routine work tasks. Infants and young kids have an instinctive gift that enables them to get the most of even the briefest nap but for adults it can be a struggle to get the brief sleep that our bodies and minds crave so fiercely.
So why is it that so many people have difficulty when it comes to snagging quality sleep with their naptime snooze? There are experts who feel that the answer is very simple. It all depends on whether or not you know how to lay the groundwork for a really effective siesta.
Kids can give themselves up to the napping experience and forget about everything but the need to sleep. Adults find it a little more difficult to drift away from the realities of daily life even for a full night of sleep let alone a short nap.
Here are some great ideas that can help you create a better environment when you want to nap. This will make your naptime a more refreshing and rejuvenating experience which is what taking a nap should be in the first place.
You may not be aware that your mind and body need a certain amount of sleep to function at peak performance. There are many people who brag about being able to effectively get through the day with only 3-4 hours of sleep. Unfortunately this brief amount of rest is shortchanging your body and brain and there is no way anyone can remain on top of their game when they are not getting sufficient rest and sleep. Yes, there are some who can accomplish their work after just a few hours of sleep but research can show that their reaction times and critical thinking skills are lower than they should be. In some instances this will make little difference in a person’s day but generally speaking it is far better to be able to function at maximum capacity instead of working at 3/4 power isn’t it?
Follow some of these tips and you can take your naptime snooze to the next level.
Try to meditate or do a few yoga stretches before your next nap. These will help relax your mind and body and can help you reduce any unnecessary stress. The calm feelings that result will definitely help you channel your best naptime bliss.
Choose an area where you can darken the room or at least shield your eyes from most of the light. Darkness encourages your brain to relax and it creates a more conducive environment for a nap.
White noise is a welcome diversion that will enable you to have a quality rest and well deserved nap. This background noise can come from a low volume radio or the hum of a gentle fan. Many people find that a CD made for the specific purpose of creating white noise is the perfect way to drift into “nap-land”.
Use an alarm that you can set at the beginning of your nap so you do not have the nagging worry that you will oversleep. You do not want any additional concerns to interfere with the enjoyment of a refreshing and soothing nap.
That caffeine in sodas, coffee and some teas is more stimulating than relaxing which means that if you are trying to catch a nap after enjoying a brisk cup of any of these beverages it will be more difficult for you to do. Ditch the caffeine at least 3-4 hours prior to an effort to catch a catnap.
Of course a longer nap is often the most desirable and beneficial but even a 15 minute snooze can be refreshing and invigorating if you listen to what your body and brain are telling you. When you feel the need to sleep that is when you should try to take a few minutes and “recharge” if it at all possible. Trying to fight through the need for sleep will make it harder to nap later. Your body knows what it needs and you should learn to become more attuned to these inner feelings.
